Wildlife havens

When people start to know that you’re interested in working with wood, they sometimes come to you with something ‘too good to throw away – do you think you could do anything with it?’

One of these was the time I was offered the old organ pipes from the Colerne Army Base Chapel. I was fundraising for a Scouts expedition to Tanzania at the time and thought maybe I could slice them into pencil pots or similar. When they arrived, they were huge. And square. Not what I imagined at all. A bit of modification (and a lot of offcuts used as firewood) and we had a full octave of bird boxes!

I’ve made a few hedgehog hibernation houses (predator proof with an internal hallway) and some more conventional birdboxes from workshop offcuts to keep the local wildlife safe and happy.

Hanging Hammock Table

I do love my hammock, but there’s nowhere to put a drink when you’re swinging gently in the trees. This ingenious little hanging hammock table suspends from a convenient branch so that your refreshments can hang alongside you.

Every hammock should have one.

Gates

Ledged and braced garden gates are a sturdy solution that won’t sag over time.

If you’ve got a sad gate that needs a lift, it might just need bracing. Or I can make you a new one as tall or as wide as you need it to be.
