Little Library
Twitter introduced me to the concept of the Little Library when I was approached to make one for a client’s mother, who’d seen them in the US and thought one would be popular where she lives in London. We have something similar in our village, in a disused telephone box, but these little wooden structures offer a chance to ‘Take a Book, Leave a Book’ as you pass.
The initial design was modified once the surprise gift idea was out of the bag and the client’s mother had her own thoughts on how she’d like it to look. A simple felt covering weatherproofs the roof and the doors have been constructed with the weather in mind, incorporating a rebate where they close and minimising potential water ingress by using piano hinge and a front-mounted design.
The Little Library was a pleasure to work on from start to finish and was a brilliant example of why I do this. Seeing the delight on the client’s face when we delivered the finished product was all the thanks I needed, but an afternoon out with my charming delivery assistant and a pizza and Peroni at the client’s favourite restaurant was the icing on the cake!
