Hello. I’m George Lister and I am passionate about woodworking.

This is a portfolio of some of the carpentry projects I have been a part of.

This bridge was constructed using glu-lam technology which was a new technique I learned. Some of the challenges we faced were ensuring the bend of the bridge was perfect without too much stress, making both beams identical to avoid twisting, it needed to be perfectly lined up with the terrain we were working with, which posed challenging as the sides weren’t level or equal to each other. As a local project, transporting the beams from workshop to site was a challenge that ultimately led to us carrying it through the village.

In June of 2022 I took part in the erection of a Green Oak Timber Frame in Wales. This expanded my knowledge and skillset of carpentry to areas I had not before experienced. The handmade green oak beams are held together by handmade wooden pegs which opened my eyes to a whole new bespoke way to woodwork without the need for screws, nails or power tools.

These two glamping pods needed sun decks and balustrades to make them fit for purpose as additional accommodation for the local pub. Working in heavy clay in a rainy season and uneven ground made the levelling of the deck difficult and shaping the curve of the deck to the curve of the pod added an extra level of complexity. The natural railing proved a unique challenge as each willow piece was hand picked to work with the natural bends of the one before and each one fixed individually to the framing. The Pods are now fully booked all summer with customers enjoying the view from the decks.

This pergola was 8 meters long and I was responsible for measuring, cutting, shaping and notching all 20 horizontal beams independently. Installation required the setting of 4 staddle stones and then perfectly matching the component parts of the pergola to sit on top. This self-supporting structure was assembled without the use of screws or nails.

When confronted with a small area to try and fit a whole bedroom’s worth of furniture I had to design a way to efficiently utilise the space. This project was one of the first projects I took charge in and designed myself. I created a high sleeper bed, wardrobe, desk and drawers in plywood with a vanish finish supported by black scaffolding style ladder and bed rail. Furniture making required a different level of finesse as most of the parts need to fit within millimetres to get the strongest finish and eliminate gaps where plaster may not have been perfectly smooth.
