Our Mission
Creating beautiful projects in wood.
Give me a spanner and I can shear a nut just by looking at it. Give me some wood, though, and I’m in my element. School memories of Mr ‘Three fingers’ Judge, the woodwork teacher, have stayed with me all these years and his mantra of ‘measure twice, cut once’ has saved me more times than I’d care to count. When lockdown gifted me more spare time than I’ve had in years by putting an abrupt halt to my usual work-based travel, I set to making my cobbled together workshop into something close to what I’d always dreamed of.
Some shiny new tools to get to grips with I started tackling some projects around the house with a bespoke high-sleeper bed, with wardobe, drawers and a desk beneath it for No1 son, some floating shelves in the kitchen, some desperately needed order for the pile of wellies at the back door and a crazy cloud-shaped loo-roll shelf for the bathroom. Actually, that one’s still a work in progress, but keep that to yourself.
Through word of mouth between friends and villagers, I started to pick up jobs for other people until I felt I could start to charge a bit for the projects – and fund my growing tool habit. I can’t promise to be quick – alas I still have a proper full time job, too – but I won’t charge commercial rates. Sometimes I’ll be learning on the job, but every project brings different techniques and challenges and that’s the joy of working with wood.
